"Two versts from Moscow" mile stone dated 1783
Один из сохранившихся в современной Москве верстовых столбов сейчас стоит в сквере около станции метро Площадь Ильича.
В 1783 году здесь проходила граница города того времени — Камер-Коллежский земляной вал – земляная насыпь со рвом. И здесь же была Рогожская застава – место таможенной проверки ввозимых в город грузов, от нее и сохранился этот знак. На всех заставах Москвы в конце XVIII века были установлены подобные верстовые столбы, а ликвидированы они были в 1918 году большевиками, которые считали их одним из символов царской России.
На знаке написано: «От Москвы две версты» – это около 2134 метров и расстояние считалось по дороге от Садового кольца.
А от самой Рогожской заставы тогда начинались три дороги: Владимирка до Владимира – теперь это современное шоссе Энтузиастов, Носовиха до Павловского Посада и Коломенка до Рязани.
Еще один подобный столб, сохранившийся, но видоизмененный, находится на Кутузовском проспекте рядом с Бородинской панорамой.

One of the old milestones found in modern Moscow is located in a small park or public garden near the Ploschad Ilyicha metro station.
In 1783, the city border ran here – the Kamer-Kollezhsky earth mound – an earth levee with a moat. Also, Rogozhskaya Zastava was situated here – the place of customs inspection of goods imported into the city. The milestone shown in the photos was part of the Rogozhskaya Zastava customs checkpoint. At the end of the 18th century, each Moscow customs checkpoint had similar milestones, and the Bolsheviks, who considered them one of the symbols of Tsarist Russia, extirpated them in 1918.
The sign says: "Two versts from Moscow" – where "verst" is a Russian unit of distance equal to 1.067 kilometers (0.6629 mile), so, it is about 2134 meters, and the distance was calculated along the road from the Garden Ring.
Three roads began from the Rogozhskaya Zastava checkpoint: Vladimirka road to the city of Vladimir – it is the modern Entuziastov highway, Nosovikha to Pavlovsky Posad and Kolomenka to Ryazan.
Another similar milestone, preserved but modified, is located on Kutuzovsky prospekt next to the Battle of Borodino museum-panorama.
